There are plenty of places in Western New York to get a good burger, in fact we made up a list of our favorites a couple months ago. That said, there aren’t many places dedicated to just making burgers. Soho Burger Bar opened in 2011 but I don’t find myself in the Chippewa area too often. The Knight Slider is dedicated solely to making some crazy burgers (and Roaming Buffalo has great options as well), but the trucks aren’t always out when I am out to dinner or when I have a burger craving.
I didn’t pay much attention to My Burger Bar until some of my foodie friends started visiting and really liking the place. After an endorsement from our buddy Alan Bedenko (who loves himself a good burger), I knew I had to try it out.
It took a while, but I finally managed to take a couple extended lunch breaks to visit My Burger Bar. When I decided to visit during an off day (i.e. weekdays for lunch), I had no problem finding a seat. When I attempted to visit for a Friday lunch, I noticed a very busy dining room and decided to try another day.
On my first visit I decided to try one of their specials, the “Big Daddy” (burger, french fries, coleslaw, pickles, BBQ sauce). Before the burger came, I enjoyed a complimentary trip to their salad bar (one trip comes with the purchase of any burger). The bar was freshly stocked and pretty much on par with most salad bars, nothing too exciting/different but definitely a good deal for people who enjoy salads. The burger came out shortly after and was massive. A combination of pure size and sloppiness made me realize that I couldn’t eat this thing with my hands. After using a fork and a knife, I made my way through the burger. It was juicy and the fries had a really good crunch and were still warm, the coleslaw was heavy on the mayo and the BBQ sauce had a nice tangy flavor. I really enjoyed the burger and ultimately collapsed into a food coma later on that day at work. I guess I wish it had been easier to eat but when you’re ordering a “Big Daddy” you should know what you’re getting into.
On my next visit I ordered the Bacon n’ Eggs (above) which comes with slices of bacon, a fried egg, cheese, tomato, lettuce and their house sauce. At first I felt pretty confident that I’d be able to eat one of these with my own hands but again, the height of the sandwich was too intimidating and I ate the entire burger with a fork and knife. The burger was juicy, the slices of bacon were crispy and thick, the egg was still runny and the house sauce really hit the spot. After a couple of bites of my Onion Ring order (crispy with a little too much batter), I asked the waitress for a side of the house sauce to dip into because I really enjoyed it.
On both visits I thought the burgers were really great. My only real complaint was the difficulty in actually eating them, but maybe I’ve either lost my ability to eat a burger or I simply ordered really messy burgers. The location is very simple and everything in the restaurant looks and feels very new. It was very clean and there are a couple large flat screens to watch TV while you eat. They offer other food options, but their burger menu (along with an extensive “Create Your own Burger” menu) is really the main draw and worth a visit for any burger fan. You can order spiked milkshakes if that’s your thing, but the location doesn’t really feel like a place that I’d want to do some serious drinking in. If the location was closer to home or work, I’d definitely go on a more regular basis.
