We Ate Lays 3 New Flavors and Lived to Tell About It

Lays 3 New Flavors

While we love fine dining, shopping at farmers markets and purchasing local produce and meat as much as possible, we also have certain guilty pleasures. I particularly enjoy weird junk food. Case in point, I find the Cool Ranch Doritos Taco disgusting but also fascinating. For those of you who haven’t heard, Lays had a contest last year where fans could suggest their dream flavor from July to October 2012. Somehow I missed the announcement of this contest and just found out about their three new flavors a couple days ago; Chicken & Waffles, Cheesy Garlic Bread and Sriracha (honestly though, how many people probably suggested Sriracha? a lot.).

After a couple days of searching Wegmans, Tops, 7-11’s, Targets and Rite Aids, we finally purchased all three new test flavors of Lays. I’m sure in the coming weeks you’ll find these bags literally everywhere, but at the moment it’s a little hit or miss. After trying every flavor this weekend, here’s what we thought of Lay’s new flavors…

Chicken & Waffles

Chicken & Waffles: Created by Christina Abu-Judom from Phoenix, Az. I was pretty excited to try these. I had a pretty good idea of what the other flavors would taste like but I had absolutely no idea what a Chicken & Waffle potato chip would be. Alli thought they had a sweet BBQ flavor but I mostly tasted maple syrup, although one out of every 10 chips had a bit of a chicken spice (Alli says I’m crazy and there was no chicken flavor at all). These were probably the weirdest flavor out of the three and didn’t taste like any other potato chip I’ve ever had. Alli was not a fan and I definitely couldn’t eat more then a couple of these at a time.

Sriracha

Sriracha: Created by Tyler Raineri from Lake Zurich, Il. First of all, I can’t believe that Tyler was the only person who recommended Sriracha flavored chips. Considering the rise of Sriracha in pop culture, I would have bet that thousands of people have requested the flavor, which makes it even more disappointing that this flavor was probably the most boring and my least favorite. Besides being a little spicy, I thought they simply tasted like a ketchup flavored chip with a little heat and completely lacking any sriracha flavor at all. I thought this was going to be a slam dunk winner and was pretty disappointed with the finished product, adding sriracha to a chip seems so simple.

Cheesy Garlic Bread

Cheesy Garlic Bread: Created by Karen Weber-Mendham of Land O’ Lakes, WI. I had heard that these were gross from family and friends and I probably had the least amount of expectations for this flavor. For better or worse, this chip is the closest to actually tasting like it’s description. They actually do taste like cheesy garlic bread; not a fresh order that you’d find in a restaurant but more like a microwavable box of Texas Toast. Regardless, I thought it was the best flavor and the only one that I could eat a large amount of without feeling gross. They are still a little funky but definitely the closest to tasting like an actual potato chip that you’d buy in a store. Alli absolutely hated these but they won me over and got my vote.

If you are a junk food conessiour, check your local Tops, Wegmans (although we visited 3 and couldn’t find any of them), Target or 7-11 for the new flavors. I’m not sure how long all three will be available but it appears that it will be a limited time (at least according to Michael Symon and Eva Longoria). If you happen to miss trying these flavors before they are gone, you’re really not missing that much.

I really love food and I love living in the city of Buffalo. I'm here to talk about both of those things.

The Chicken and Waffles were the grossest thing I’ve ever tasted. Since I’ve never had Sriacha I can’t compare to the real thing, but they were pleasantly warm. The cheese garlic bread tasted just like it said.
