Today’s Buffalo Foodie is Dan Gigante, the owner and president of the Buffalo based T-shirt company You and Who. These aren’t your normal graphic tees; the sales of these shirts support various organizations and local artists around the country. Here’s how the website works: a local artist submits a design for a shirt, proceeds from the sale of those shirts go towards a charity from that artist’s town (and to the artist) and the customer gets a pretty cool looking shirt. The company has been in operation since 2010 and is currently selling shirts that benefit 89 organizations in 40 cities across the US. Here are some of their t-shirts that benefit Buffalo, Rochester and Niagara Falls organizations.
Right now Dan is trying to raise money with an Indiegogo campaign so that he can make the ‘goodest t-shirt ever’. After seeing the devastating Savar building collapse on the news this April, Dan decided that he wanted to take control of where his shirts were coming from. This campaign is to help You and Who make their own shirts, right here in the US with quality materials and hand made by American workers. There are four limited edition designs available (two are #BillsMafia themed) with certain levels of donation or you can just kick in a couple bucks. It’s a great organization that’s worth checking out and they have some fantastic designs, so check them out and grab a couple t-shirts as holiday gifts this year.
Since Dan is a Buffalo native, we decided to ask him our usual questions about his favorite places to eat and drink around town. Here’s what he had to say….
Right now, where are your favorite places to eat in WNY?
Dan: Right now my favorite meal is the El Hombre burrito from Lloyd! Really, it’s their chorizo I love. The breakfast burrito they have is amazing too. It’s all just so good! I’m both proud and a little scared to admit that for a short time I was the Foursquare Mayor of 2 of the 3 Lloyd Taco trucks. Otherwise, my favorite restaurants are Shango, Left Bank, and Amy’s Place.
Where do you like to grab a couple drinks with friends and hang out?
Dan: I live pretty close to Blue Monk and they always have a great selection, including the great beers that my friends at Community Beer Works put out. If it’s between Thanksgiving and New Year’s, then it’s The Place for a Tom & Jerry.
If you had a friend visiting from out of town, where would you take them for a good “Buffalo” time?
Dan: The last few friends we’ve had in town we’ve taken down to The Liberty Hound. Location-wise, it’s a nice spot to show the progress that has been made at Canalside. I’ve also taken people to Duff’s on Sheridan & Millersport, as I think they have the best Wings in Buffalo. Also, from my house, it’s a nice walk to down to Vera Pizzeria for a late night drink.
What are some food memories you have from your childhood?
Dan: Well, like most people I bet, I love my Mom’s cooking – anything she makes. When my Grandma (my Dad’s mom) was alive, everything SHE cooked was amazing, too. Other than home, some places that stand out from my childhood are: Eileen’s in West Seneca (specifically their White cream donuts), TED’s, and Ilio DiPaolo’s.
Are there any cuisines or types of restaurants you’d like to see in WNY?
Dan: My girlfriend Katie is on the board of the International Institute of Buffalo, so I get to see first hand just how diverse the cuisine is becoming here. I do wish we had more Jamba Juice locations than just the one at UB, but otherwise, I feel like there’s a restaurant to scratch pretty much every itch in Buffalo.
We’d like to thank Dan for taking time out of his schedule to asking a couple of our questions and highly recommend you check out You and Who’s website or follow them along on facebook or twitter to keep up with the latest news and t-shirt designs.
