The Best Thing I Ever Ate

In September of 2010, renown chef Geoffrey Zakarian talked about his love of Charlie The Butcher’s Beef on Weck.  It was during the 4 season of The Best Thing I Ever Ate in their “At The Deli” episode.  Zakarian’s wife is a Buffalo native and apparently introduced him to the sandwich.  The full 2 1/2 minute clip finally found its way onto YouTube, watch the entire thing below…

I am a transplant to buffalo from Northern New York, Watertown, and I can’t get enough of Buffalo. I am always pleased when there are positive things brought to light about our city. Thanks for the video!

+1 to Brian above. I grew up just outside of Watertown NY myself (Black River) and moved to Buffalo in the mid 70’s to go to college. I ended up staying there 20 years. There was a bar on Bailey Ave (Anacone’s) where you could watch the bartender (Dave) carve your $1 beef on weck and you could get 3 Rolling Rock splits to wash it down with for a dollar more. As a poor college kid that was quite the meal. I worked in a restaurant during college and learned how to cook chicken wings properly (unlike the so called Buffalo wings offered anywhere else) but never did get to learn the proper technique on how to do a beef on weck right. I’m in Virginia now but get to Buffalo now and then and I see I need to get to Charlie’s because that is how I remember a good beef being made.

I prefer Mcpartlan’s and French Pub’s roast beef sandwiches which I think are much better.
